The Tests
The Theory Test
The theory test is made up of two parts; a multiple choice section and a Hazard Perception test. You will need to pass both parts of the theory test at the same sitting to obtain your theory test pass certificate.
The multiple choice section is delivered using a touch screen computer and mouse, to pass you must answer 43 or more questions correctly out of 50, while the hazard perception test records your responses through the use of a computer mouse button. The test consists of 14 video clips, each lasting about one minute. The clips feature various types of hazards, such as vehicles, pedestrians and road conditions. You should respond by pressing a mouse button as soon as you see a hazard developing that may result in the driver having to take some action, such as changing speed or direction. The earlier the developing hazard is spotted, and a response made, the higher the score.
Candidates can score up to five marks on each hazard and the test contains 15 scoreable hazards.
When booking your theory test application forms are available from test centres, your driving instructor or the booking number below. Forms need to be sent with a cheque, postal order or credit or debit card details. I will discuss with you the best time to take your theory test. The best way to book your theory test is online.
The Practical Test
Pupils who pass first time are well prepared and have plenty of practice. They pass because they wait until they are ready. I have the knowledge and experience to tell you when that is.
As your instructor I can book your practical test for you.
This can be done online www.dsa.gov.uk or by calling 0870 0101 372 for both theory and practical tests.
The test will last approximately 40 minutes from start to finish.
You will be driving for approximately 30-35 minutes.
You will be asked to read a number plate at 20.5m (67feet) or 20m (66feet) plates from 2001. Two questions are asked of the mechanical nature of the vehicle starting with the words Show Me or Tell Me. A list of these questions is available here. However, these are due to be amended sometime in Summer 2008
You are asked to carry out two of the following
- Reverse round a corner
- A Turn in the road
- A reverse park ( either into a parking space or behind a car on the road )
You may also be asked to carry out a controlled stop (emergency stop)
The drive will take you around various road conditions, with speed limits up to 70mph.
